Saving works better when the money is out of reach

The hardest part of saving is not earning more; it is not spending what you have already set aside. A separate balance with the goal written on it does most of that work.

Almost nobody fails to save because they do not know they should. They fail on a Tuesday, when something is needed now and the money set aside is sitting in the same balance they pay for lunch from.

That is not weakness. It is arithmetic. The money is there, the need is real, and the saving was never defended by anything except intention.

A name and a different place

A goal is a separate balance with a name on it: school fees, new freezer, emergency.

Money you move into it leaves your spendable balance. It does not show up when you are deciding what you can afford, because it is not, in the sense that matters, available.

That is almost the entire mechanism, and it works better than it has any right to. The step of deliberately taking money back out of the goal is enough friction to make most people stop and think — and stopping to think is the whole battle.

Nothing is locked

You can take it back whenever you want. It is your money.

The separation is practical and psychological, not a lock. A savings product that traps people is a product that makes money from their emergencies, and that is not a business worth being in.

It does not pay interest, and we will not imply it does

A goal is a set-aside balance: your own money, held apart from your spending balance.

It does not earn interest. It is not invested. It is not lent out while you are not looking.

Anybody describing a product like this with words like returns, growth or yield is describing something materially different, and the difference will eventually matter to somebody who did not read carefully.

Same ledger, same statements

A goal is on the same ledger as everything else, with the same statements and the same reconciliation. It is a set-aside, not a separate product with separate books that have to be kept in step.

How to actually use it

Two things work better than any feature:

Move money the day it arrives, not at the end of the week. What is still there on Friday was never really saved.

Give it a specific name. School fees, January defends itself on a difficult Tuesday in a way that savings does not.

What it costs

Nothing to create or hold.

What you can check

These are facts about the running platform, not adjectives. Each one is visible in the product, in the API reference or in the ledger.

  • A goal balance is held apart from the spendable balance, so it does not appear as money available to spend.
  • It is on the same ledger with the same statements — saving is a set-aside, not a separate product with separate books.
  • The money is yours and withdrawable; nothing is locked and nothing is lent out.
  • A goal is described as a set-aside balance, not as an interest-bearing or investment account, because it is not one.

What it costs

Free to create and hold. Moving money in and out of a goal is a movement within your own account.

Is it switched on?

Whether this is available depends on the authorisations in place and on what the administrator of a given deployment has switched on. That changes, and an article does not — so the live answer lives on the feature page, which reads it from the platform itself: Goal savings on the features page.

Frequently asked questions

Does it pay interest?

No, and we will not imply otherwise. It is a set-aside balance: your own money, held apart from your spending balance so that it is harder to spend by accident. Anything describing a product like this as earning returns is describing something different.

Can I take it out early?

Whenever you like. It is your money. The separation is psychological and practical, not a lock — and a savings product that traps people is not one we want to run.

Why does a separate balance help at all?

Because the hardest moment in saving is a difficult Tuesday when the money is visible in the same place you pay for lunch. Moving it somewhere with a name on it adds a deliberate step, and a deliberate step is usually enough.
